The evolution of search engines and how it affects your content

Search engines today are nothing like they were back in early 2000 when the internet was chaotic and cluttered. Back then, the internet came off more like the wild west when it was dominated by a few companies and you could Ask Jeeves anything.

Due to being unregulated, an online search left users with results that were either scams, malware or unrelated. If you were having an unlucky day, sometimes you would get all three.

Over the years, companies like Google implemented PageRank (algorithmic search) that provided some internet order. It was also the start of what became known as search engine optimization (SEO), internet articles that were keyword stuffed to the point of exploding.

While you could still Ask Jeeves pretty much anything, you could also now question Ask.com, which was the evolved version of Jeeves.

The Ask.com search engine was the early pioneer that allowed users to ask natural-language questions online. Jeeves was answering questions long before Google made their debut.

As of May 2026, Ask.com no longer exists as an answer engine. The company’s 30-year run came to an end on May 1, citing intense competition with Google due to the ever-evolving search engine industry.

Google simply has faster algorithms, a cleaner user interface, and the majority share of the global market.

While Jeeves hit the market first, Google simply outpaced them.

Today’s modern searching no longer means being shown links to websites like it was with Ask.com. Now, answer engines like Google return results to questions pulled from crawled information across the web with a citation.
